Koss Construction Co.
Koss Construction Company was founded by George W. Koss in 1912 in Des Moines, lowa. The company relocated to Topeka, Kansas to be closer to our Midwest region-focused construction projects in 1998.
As president of the national Associated General Contractors of America, George C. Koss advocated for and testified at Congress for passage of the National Interstate and Defense Act (Federal Highway Act) to establish interstate highways in the mid-1950s.
Koss Construction Company completed the first project of the Interstate Highway Program on I-70 West of Topeka. The company also completed the first project funded in the Interstate Highway Program on US 66 which later became I-44 in Missouri.
Koss employees being referred to as Hard Roaders stems from the age when America was transitioning from horse and buggy to motorized vehicles. Most roads at the time were dirt or gravel. The citizens were demanding better roads - "Hard Roads.” Koss Construction began building these new hard roads; hence the name “Hard Roaders” was given to Koss employees.
Since joining the Kansas Contractors Association 90 years ago, the company has been very involved and has proudly served on the Board of Directors and on several committees.
Koss Construction Company today is a leading general contractor specializing in highway and airfield construction headquartered in Topeka, Kansas. The last 108 years of history is the foundation that allows Koss to deliver a wide array of products and services to a multitude of owners with a consistent emphasis on safety, quality, and integrity. The men and women who have joined the company know that we are big enough to do what we say, and small enough to manage our every endeavor as though it is our most important.
